The Perfect Marathon Preparation
The Rotterdam Marathon is one of Europe's fastest and most popular marathons, with start and finish on the Coolsingel. Hotels in Rotterdam book up fast on marathon weekend and charge premium rates. 't Goude Hooft in The Hague offers a smarter alternative — quieter, more luxurious, and surprisingly close.
The Evening Before the Marathon
Carb-Loading at 't Goude Hooft
Our dinner menu offers exactly what a runner needs the evening before:
- Pasta Rigatoni Tomato — Carbs, tomato sauce, easily digestible. The classic choice.
- Truffle Pasta — Rigatoni with truffle sauce and mushrooms. A touch more luxurious, equally effective.
- Salmon en Croûte — Protein and omega-3, with gratin as a carb source.
- Rotisserie Chicken — Lean protein, with apple sauce and gratin.
- Pizza Margherita — Simple, carb-rich, tried and tested.
- Poke Bowl — Rice, fish, vegetables. Light and nutritious.
Eat early (ideally before 20:00) and drink plenty of water. Our staff are accustomed to guests who prefer an early dinner.
A Quiet Night
Our suites are in The Hague's peaceful historic centre — no city noise, no marathon excitement keeping you up. The jacuzzi helps relax your muscles. The fireplace brings calm. Sleep deep, wake rested.

Getting to the Start
- 't Goude Hooft → Den Haag Centraal: 10-minute walk. Easy pace, save the legs.
- Intercity Den Haag Centraal → Rotterdam Centraal: 25 minutes. Trains run from ~05:30 on race day. Extra services on marathon Sunday.
- Rotterdam Centraal → Start (Coolsingel): 15-minute walk or short metro to Beurs.
- Total: approximately 55 minutes door-to-start. Plan to arrive 2.5 hours before the start for a relaxed warm-up.
After the Finish
Back to Your Suite
Same route in reverse. After 42.195 kilometres, you want just one thing: to recover.
- Metro/walk to Rotterdam Centraal (or have your travel companions pick you up).
- Intercity back to The Hague — 25 minutes seated, stretch those legs.
- 10 minutes back to 't Goude Hooft.
Recovery at 't Goude Hooft
- Jacuzzi — Warm water for your tired muscles. Every suite has one.
- Dinner — You've earned it. Your body needs carbs and protein:
- Tournedos or rib-eye — iron and protein.
- Salmon — omega-3 for recovery.
- Pasta — replenish carbs.
- Or simply a burger — you've run 42 km, you're allowed anything.
- Dessert — Warm apple strudel, dame blanche, tiramisu. No guilt today.
For Travel Companions and Supporters
Not everyone is running — and that's fine. While the runner trains or rests, supporters can enjoy:
- Exploring The Hague — Mauritshuis, Binnenhof, shopping in the Passage.
- Scheveningen beach — Tram 1, 15 minutes.
- High tea — Scones and indulgence while the runner rests.
- On race day: train to Rotterdam, cheer along the course, back to The Hague for the celebration dinner.
Why Not Stay in Rotterdam?
- Peace and quiet: The Hague city centre is far calmer than Rotterdam on marathon weekend. Better sleep.
- Availability: Rotterdam hotels fill up fast and charge marathon premiums.
- Luxury: A suite with jacuzzi versus a standard hotel room — for the same budget.
- Recovery: Jacuzzi, own restaurant, no crowds. Exactly what you need after a marathon.
